The Pembina Institute is a leading authority on climate change policy. But we have also created hands-on tools that help individuals and businesses reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution:
Commit to Reducing Your Emissions
Pembina's One Less Tonne tool presents 20 simple actions you can take to reduce GHG pollution at home and on the road. One Less Tonne invites you to change the way you use energy so that you can cut your personal emissions by at least one tonne. With every action you choose, you’ll get a tally of the emission reductions you'll achieve, as well as the money you'll save through reduced electricity or fuel costs.

Demand Government Leadership
Although individuals play an important part, preventing the worst impacts of climate change depends above all on governments implementing effective policies and measures to reduce GHG pollution. In Canada, we need a comprehensive climate change plan that cuts GHG emissions from all major sources. Amongst other things, governments must:
- set regulated targets and standards for heavy industry, vehicles, and appliances
- provide major financial incentives for the products and technologies that reduce emissions most
- invest in infrastructure that reduces fossil fuel use; and
- set short-, medium- and long-term targets that put us on a path to deep emission reductions
Ask your federal, provincial and local government representatives what they’re doing to cut GHG pollution. At election time, consider supporting political parties with a strong, comprehensive plan to fight global warming.
Buy Wind Power
One important way you can reduce GHG emissions is to switch to green electricity. The Pembina Institute is partnering with Bullfrog Power to offer 100% emission-free, renewable wind power for your computer, home or business. Part of the proceeds from this program go towards Pembina's work for a sustainable energy future.

Climate Change, Development and the CDM
In addition to our work on Canada's domestic climate change policy, the Pembina Institute is noted for its experience with the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). A key part of the protocol, the CDM encourages developed countries with greenhouse gas (GHG) targets to invest in emission reduction projects in developing countries. Pembina’s work aims to ensure that the CDM delivers genuine reductions in GHG pollution, particularly by helping expand developing countries’ access to low-impact renewable energy.
Green Learning
Greenlearning.ca is an innovative online education program that integrates with provincial curricula. A highly successful pilot program in Alberta has enabled expansion to Ontario and B.C. Teachers, students and citizens alike can gain a wealth of information on climate change, clean energy solutions, energy efficiency and more from the Pembina Institute's Greenlearning.ca site.
Build and Learn Teaching Tools
Produced in 1999, this wildly successful on-line resource continues to be an essential hands-on teaching tool for helping the next generation of Canadians understand how renewable energy can help combat climate change. Well over 1.5 million construction and teaching plans have been downloaded from the site since it was launched.

Helping Communities and Companies Take Action
Pembina also has programs to help companies and communities reduce their GHG pollution. For companies, these programs include advice on the development and implementation of strategies, advice on GHG offsets, scenario planning, Life Cycle Value Assessment and employee-based GHG reduction campaigns. For communities, Pembina undertakes energy planning, sustainability planning, research on Smart Growth, and policy and program design.
