Albertans left out of the process, lose royalty revenue

Albertans, the owners of the province's oil and gas resources, were completely left out of the process of reviewing Alberta's royalty rates, says Chris Severson-Baker, Policy Director for the Pembina Institute.

Pembina Reacts to 2010 Federal Budget

Canada hits rock bottom on investments in environment

The 2010 federal budget could hardly do less on renewable energy and climate change issues, said Tim Weis, Director of the Pembina Institute's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Program.

A policy expert from the Pembina Institute will be available for comment and analysis following the release of the federal budget on March 4.

Matthew Bramley, Director of the Pembina Institute's Climate Change Program, said today's federal Throne Speech fails to clearly signal an improvement in the government's poor track record on climate change and investment in the clean energy economy.

Matt Horne, Director of British Columbia Energy Solutions for the Pembina Institute, made the following statement in response to the British Columbia budget tabled today:

"Fresh off the Olympics, British Columbians were looking for big strides toward a clean energy economy. But continued carbon tax loopholes combined with oil and gas subsidies amount to a near $700 million lost opportunity in these investments."

The B.C. government should strengthen its carbon tax in the 2010 budget, according to a set of recommendations released by the Pembina Institute.

Ignoring Oil Sands Impacts Undermines Pipeline Review

Proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline would result in a 30% increase in average daily oil sands output

Environmental assessment of proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline will ignore the impacts of increased oil sands production

Pembina's climate change director says Canada's climate performance is the "worst in the industrialized world" after Canada ranks 56th out of 57 countries evaluated by the Climate Change Performance Index.

Stephen Harper will be the only G-7 leader to arrive in Copenhagen without a major national program to support renewable power.  New data from Natural Resources Canada reveal that the federal government's support for renewables will effectively end as of January 2010.

Pembina’s policy proposal is market-based and would promote innovation in industry. By forcing polluters to pay, Albertans would protect Alberta’s environment while enabling our economy to grow 44 per cent over the next decade.

Pembina's climate change team will be in Copenhagen from December 6 to 18. Find out how to reach them, and how to access Pembina's resources for reporters covering the UN Climate Summit.

Climate change policy analyst P.J. Partington applauds a Bloc Québécois motion on Copenhagen, proposing that Canada commit to a science-based emissions reduction target and support developing countries' efforts to face global warming.

Selon une modélisation économique commandée par l’Institut Pembina et la Fondation David Suzuki, le Canada peut réussir sur le plan économique tout en atteignant ses objectifs de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre.

Canada can succeed economically while meeting targets to reduce global warming pollution, according to an economic modelling study.

Canada's plan for regulating greenhouse gas pollution may not be unveiled before December's UN climate summit in Copenhagen, "a sad continuation of the government's longstanding failure to show leadership on climate change," said Matthew Bramley, Director of the Pembina Institute's Climate Change Program.

In a joint statement released today, a unique partnership of industry and environmental organizations have outlined the key elements for an effective Canadian cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gas emissions.

Amy Taylor, Director of Alberta Energy Solutions at the Pembina Institute, responded to the announcement that the Governments of Alberta and Canada will provide a $779 million subsidy to TransAlta's Pioneer Carbon Capture and Storage project.

Tim Weis, Director of the Pembina Institute’s renewable energy and efficiency program, reacted to Michael Ignatieff’s speech today in Vancouver, saying the Liberal leader's committments to make significant investments in clean energy jobs and set a hard cap on carbon emissions are encouraging, but more details about targets and mechanisms are needed to make the plan workable.
